The team of Krzysztof Murawski and Stefaan Poedts received EU funding for the implementation of the space weather project, worth over EUR 3 million from the Horizon 2020 Programme.

The project with the acronym SWATNET aims to make a breakthrough in understanding the physical basis of the key cosmic weather factors affecting the Earth. The consortium consists of nine beneficiaries and seven partner organisations from seven different European countries with diverse and complementary expertise. The Project coordinator is University of Helsinki from Finland. On the part of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, the key investigators will be Krzysztof Murawski and Stefaan Poetds, who is employed at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University as part of the Research in Lublin initiative.

Thanks to the project, the next generation of heliophysicists will be trained, among other things by developing and applying a new methodology that can be used to discover the basic physical processes taking place in the solar atmosphere and contributing to space weather. The project will last for 4 years and has a total budget of more than €3 million.

From 24 to 29 September 2019 nuclear physicists will join annual Nuclear Physics Workshop in Kazimierz Dolny. The topic of this coference devoted to theory of nuclear structure is "Key problems in nuclear physics". The organizer is Department of Theoretical Physics, Institute of Physics of UMCS in Lublin.

This year over 70 participants attend in the meeting. We have planned over 50 lectures and moreover several poster presentations.

On 20 th September 2019 Agnieszka Szulerecka defended her PhD thesis on "Group theory analysis of the selected discrete groups of intrinsic symmetries in a quadrupol-octupol collective nuclear model". Prof. Andrzej Góźdź was the supervisor of the thesis. Prof. Michał Kowal from NCBJ, Warsaw and prof. Katarzyna Mazurek from IFJ, Cracow prepared the reviews.

Congratulations for the new doctor in physics!

Prof. Tomasz Paterek from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore with collaborators was awarded Ig Nobla prize from biology for discovering that dead magnetized cockroaches behave differently than living magnetized cockroaches.

Ig Nobel prize is awarded for serious research that has some humorous or extraordinary meaning. It is very well recognized in the academic world. One of Ig Nobel Prize winners was Andre Gleim who get Nobel Prize later.
